The terms sustainable and ethical fashion are frequently used, but what do they really entail?

Sustainable and ethical fashion refers to all processes, products and activities that aim to minimise environmental harm and social injustice within the fashion industry. Sustainable and ethical fashion intends to foster a carbon-neutral industry whilst prioritising animal welfare, social justice, and ecological prosperity.

Whilst the concepts of sustainable and ethical fashion overlap, sustainable fashion primarily focuses on the environmental aspects of clothing production. Whereas ethical fashion concentrates more on how fashion impacts the worker’s well-being and and human health.

In contrast, fast fashion is causing severe environmental damage and humanitarian issues. Fast fashion refers to cheap mass-produced clothing based on catwalk trends. Fast fashion is produced quickly to retail in fashion stores whilst demand for a trend is at its highest. As a trend goes out of style, these garments are discarded and overflow landfills.

Various aspects of social media contribute to fast fashion. Social media accelerates the life cycle of fashion trends, continuously giving rise to new styles. However, social media can be used as a tool for brands to promote their sustainability goals and create awareness.
